A Lesson In The Art Of The Disingenuous Argument

Disingenuous: Lacking in candor, giving the false impression of simple frankness.

“I favor the Violence Against Women Act and have supported it at various points over the years, but there are matters put on that bill that almost seem to invite opposition,” said Senator Jeff Sessions, Republican of Alabama, who opposed the latest version last month in the Judiciary Committee. “You think that’s possible? You think they might have put things in there we couldn’t support that maybe then they could accuse you of not being supportive of fighting violence against women?”

This is Senator Jeff Sessions, Republican of Alabama, giving us the very definition of Disingenuousness.

Just what is in the bill that forces Republicans’ who would normally rally to any bill that protects women from violence, step away from it? Is it expanding the law to reach Indian tribes in rural areas and protect women from violence involving men outside the tribal area? Is it increasing the availability of free legal assistance of victims of domestic violence to extend the definition of violence to include stalking? Is it allowing more battered illegal immigrants to claim temporary visas? That must be it, the immigration angle! Or maybe including same sex couples in programs for domestic violence is what forces Republicans to vote against the extension of the act to suspect that they are being trapped into taking a position against women.

Against All Odds: The Gender Gap

Yesterday, these lyrics were running through my head. All day I heard my own ringtone. “He’s not much to look at he’s no hero out of books, two or three girls he likes as much as me… he beats me, too.” I think I’m hearing those words because the gender gap helped re-elect President Barack Obama. Everyone, Republicans and Democrats, want to puzzle out how it happened. Especially the Republicans, because they lived in a bubble that said polls and math and science were rigged to the liberals. They just can’t believe it happened…their vapid guy lost!

I went back to the original lyrics of the song sang by Fanny Brice in the Ziegfeld Follies. Here they are. I am inspired by the victory of women over our conditioning.

It’s cost me a lot
But there’s one thing that I’ve got
It’s my man
Cold and wet, tired you bet
But all that I soon forget
With my man
He’s not much for looks
And no hero out of books
Is my man
Two or three girls has he
That he likes as well as me
But I love him!
I don’t know why I should
He isn’t good, he isn’t true
He beats me too
What can I do?

Oh, my man I love him so
He’ll never know
All my life is just despair
But I don’t care
When he takes me in his arms
The world is bright, all right
What’s the difference if I say
I’ll go away, When I know
I’ll come back on my knees some day?
For whatever my man is
I am his forever more
Oh, my man I love him

Sometimes I say
If I could just get away
With my man
He’d go straight sure as fate
For it never is too late
For a man
I just like to dream
Of a cottage by a stream
With my man
Where a few flowers grew
And perhaps a kid or two
Like my man
And then my eyes get wet
I most forget till he gets hot
And tells me not to talk such rot

Oh, my man I love him so
He’ll never know
All my life is just despair
But I don’t care
When he takes me in his arms
The world is bright, all right
What’s the difference if I say
I’ll go away, When I know
I’ll come back on my knees some day?
For what ever my man is
I am his forever more

A Tip for Republicans

So, when you’re thinking Voter Suppression, think: WOMEN!

I know you’re trying with insisting that women who’ve changed their name through marriage or divorce must have a voter’s identification card with their new legal name or be denied the right to vote. You’re making the voting lines as short as possible and as inconvenient as you can for the poor, students, and workers, but have you considered how unpleasant it might be for women to be forced to wait in those endless lines wearing tight panty hose and stiletto heels? A word to the wise should be sufficient.
