We have a large extended family of Eastern Grey tree squirrels living in our side yard. I see the tree where they have their condo. I see them racing madly up and down the Catalpa tree. I see them eating, running across telephone wires. I try to love them, but I keep thinking. “Rats with tails.” I heard someone say in the cuteness sweepstakes rabbits won hands down even though they really are destructive pests, but who doesn’t love a bunny?
Last night I reread an article from the New York Times which renewed my enormous respect for squirrels, made me realize that squirrels are incredible, brilliant athletes with a far more loving family life and communication system than I’d ever realized.
I know I am shallow because I wish our squirrels were reddish brown and had really thick tails. I wish, like Professor Koprowski, I had devoted my life to studying them.
