Chills

This is the first article I have seen on how hard-hit those who have yet to receive Medicare or Social Security are in this economy. It sends a chill down my spine because I have Medicare and Social Security…and I am still better off than they are? My god!

  1. Shirley Ann says:

Reminds me of the Great Depression (1930′s) stories my mother told me. Never thought I would see it happen in my lifetime.

  2. Suz says:

Here in New Mexico our GOP Governor Susana Martinez agreed to accept federal funds to extend medicaid benefits to the huge number of medicaid eligible recipients here.
Did she see finally see the light or was it that she remembered she’s up for re-election next year?

The article highlights what is fundamentally wrong with the American form of capitalism, which amounts to a religious faith that by giving all the wealth to a tiny minority, everyone will be well taken care of, and in particular that somehow a health care system that requires life-long employment to be eligible to get health care is somehow reasonable. Lose your job, lose your access to health care unless you were lucky enough to have worked for a company that guaranteed continued benefits. No other industialized nation does this as poorly as the US; even Cuba manages to get health care access closer to right than we do.

What do you think about that?
