Honey Bees are dying at an alarming rate, and this winter marked the worst losses by far. U.S. beekeepers reported that as much as 50% of their bees disappeared or died.
Last week, the European Union took a major step to protect our bee population – placing a two year ban on the thought to be responsible – but the U.S. is still finding excuses for inaction. With the health of our bee populations – and the estimated $15 billion in agricultural benefits they provide on the line – it’s time for the EPA to stop ignoring the science, and follow the EU’s lead.
This is the first article I have seen on how hard-hit those who have yet to receive Medicare or Social Security are in this economy. It sends a chill down my spine because I have Medicare and Social Security…and I am still better off than they are? My god!
I was listening to NPR on Saturday. The program was about the story telling group called “The Moth.” This particular session contained a piece by a woman who had gone to prison on drug charges (just to place it in your mind). At the end of the show writer Teju Cole was interviewed about his brilliant idea of combining the first lines of well-known novels with information about the latest drone strike. I remember one was the first line of a Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway. “Mrs Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself.” It seems hard to face the fact that our President is killing innocent people along with terrorists, using drones. Hard to think about it. This writer seems to have found a way. He uses Twitter, so these messages from our conscience are 140 characters.
An innocent country town, a shocking crime. Question by question, investigators peel off the calendar-photo surface to reveal a darker truth.
And not just in novels. News stories are often cover stories, simple and misleading. Real reporters dig deeper.
Here’s one case. Do you know others? Send them in.
I was pleased for the country that we elected Obama. I felt perhaps there was something good in our country, Americans seeing through the slimy phoniness and self-congratulation of the right. After the children died and some on the right said what we need we more weapons rather than a ban on assault weapons, I am furious again.
Here is a message from Michael Moore.
A Note From Michael Moore

I am truly beside myself this time. I tried to ring a warning bell about this a decade ago. The disease has only gotten worse.
But…you feel something different in the air across America tonight, don’t you? People have had it and the outrage is loud and visible. I’m convinced the majority of Americans will now back strong gun control laws. And a better mental health care system. And perhaps a few are willing to look at the deeper issue of how this country officially sanctions violence as a means to an end.
The NRA, for the first time ever, has gone silent. They’ve taken their Facebook page down. They know they can’t show up in Newtown next week and stick it to the people there, like they usually do after one of these mass killings. Let’s face it, the gun lobby tonight is on the ropes. Now is the time to act. We can’t let this sad moment pass without a true response and a president willing to be a strong leader.
I’ll send some more thoughts tomorrow, but for now I thought I’d share with you what I’ve been sending out over Twitter this weekend. (If you’re not on Twitter, please consider it. I know – not one more social media stop, please! But I’ve found it to be a quick and easy way to communicate with millions. Please give it a try. I send things out on it every day and I’d like you not to miss them.)
Here’s my Twitter feed since the shootings on Friday:
CBS News reporting 27 dead at CT elementary school, many/mostly children.
My friend Tom says if you see three of anything on the way to the office, it’s a trend. You know like three people wearing their baseball caps backward, drinking Starbucks and wearing flip flops in the winter. Wait! That was already a trend.
For some, the price of beauty is their pinky toes. Jezebel ran an insightful article on the resurgent trend of surgically removing the little piggies. And here’s an article and video on some of the strange objects worn as shoes.
Warning: the video is not for the faint-hearted. Even Sylvia was queasy.
